Day 3 – San Sebastion to Zarautz
Splash, squish, squish, squash…. Here comes the rain. Those four words pretty much sums up a good portion of the day. We started the day with a light rain. So we put on our rain ponchos and hit the road. Rain poncho’s are like wearing a plastic bag. You are either wet on the outside, or wet on the inside (sweat) there is nothing in between.
We arrived at San Sebastion rather late and tired. We barely had enough time to shower, laundry and get something to eat before exhastion set in. Which seems to be our current routine. The city was quite lively when we arrived, and rather subdued when we left. Aside from the rain, we had a pleasant walk along the beach promanade before climbing the hill on the north west side of town. The route began with a lot of pavement, and transitoned to a mixure of paved rural one lane road to muddy trail and back again. The rain ended around 11 AM and we were blessed with dry but overcast weather the rest of the day.
I mentioned before that the Camino Norte is different than the Camino Frances, in that it is one of solitude. While we did run into a few pilgrims, conversations we breif. Typically just a hello (hola) or a wave. We ran into the young woman from New York again. We learned she started walking straight off the airplane in Irun the day before. That takes courage… and youth I guess.
Anyway, we arrived in Zarautz dry but muddy from the day’s travels. We had just enough time to clean up, hit the laundrymat accross town and get some dinner. No time or energy left to even blog… Not as many photos as we were socked in with clouds most of the day. But despite that, the views are stunning, even though they are filled with considerable gray.
