Norte – Day 12 – Laredo – Guemes

After yesterdays adventure we welcomed something more normal. The weather for today called for rain, which showed up around 10 AM in the form of a light rain. Just enough for us to dig out the poncho’s only to pull them off 15 minutes later due to sweat and the rain subsiding. This poncho on, poncho off thing went on for a couple our hours before the sun broke through. Our route today included a nice walk along the promonade of Laredo as we walked to the end of the beach/spit to catch a ferry to Santona. This little shuttle is a welcome shortcut around the estuary delta of Laredo.

All of our journey today was on pavement. A good portion of which was a bike lane or rural roads. As we left Santona we passed the local prison. A huge complex with 30 ft concrete walls that seemed to go on forever. It had to be at least a 1/2 mile. Once past the prison we passed another beach before heading in land.

Soon the bike lane disappeared and we were left to fend for ourselves along rural roads. Most with no shoulder. Not to bad for an occasional passing car, but quite another thing for winding roads with blind corners.

Because we were on pavement, we made good time today. Completeing our 22 KM by 3 PM. And thus we arrived in Guemes where we are staying at Posoda El Angel De Guarda which is a quaint family run village inn. As we are awaiting time for dinner (8:30 PM) the rains rolled in with a bit of thunder. Other than that, it has been an uneventful day. A welcome change from yesterday.
