Norte – Day 16 – Santander

With another day to spend in Santander we awoke to windy grey day. After enjoying our yougurt and fruit for breakfast that we aquired from the supermarkato last night, we headed out to explore some of city. Our plan today included stopping by the Catedral De Santa Maria de La Asuncion again, and the Inglesia del Sagrado Corazon Jesuitas. We were not able to go into the Catedral today, but were able to go into Inglesia Del Santisimo Cristo which is a chapel at the cathderal.

We enjoyed several moments of quiet reflection taking in the beauty of the chapel Santisimo before heading in town to locate the Inglesia del Sagrado. Inglesia del Sagrado is building by the famed Spanish architect Gaudi. You can see his signature styles in the narrow spires on the building. Having seen his work on my previous trip in 2016 with the Burgos Cathedral, I wanted to see this building. From the outside the builing only has one spire, and appears to be rather simple. Yet when you enter the building, you are blown away by the amazing artwork inside. In my opinion, this building is more beautiful inside as the artwork enhances the architecture. The Burgos cathedral is also stunning, but so expansive the artwork is overshadowed by the mass of the building. I took quite a few pictures which I am sure do not due justice to the amazing artwork that covers the building from floor to ceiling.

After seeing the Iglesia’s we stopped for lunch in a wonderful italian resturant. We had perhaps one of the best meals this trip enjoying some great pasta and calzone with gelato for dessert. YUM. I should have take some pictures of the food, but it was so good we ate most of it before remembering to snap a photo.

We spent the rest of the day milling around the local shops before taking another walk on the promande.

Tomorrow we say goodbye to Spain to return to Paris to enjoy one final day before traveling home.
