Trieste day 3

We headed out early on Monday September 28th to get a jump on the high tourist areas. It was such a change from the weekend with the cruise ship hoard and busy flea market crowds gone. We got a great chance to take pictures of the Trieste canal, main square and historic buildings without all the people etc.

We visited one of the churches, and stopped for a cappuccino, chocolate shots and a treat at Trieste’s oldest coffee house. Yes, those are chocolate shots hiding behind the coffee cups. It’s served cold and is something between chocolate syrup and a runny pudding. Not as sweet as chocolate syrup though. Afterwards we walked the pier and enjoyed the bright sunny day and calm weather.

We marveled at the unique mega sailing yacht that has been a fixture in Trieste since 2022 when it was seized from its Russian owner as part of the European sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine. It’s stuck here off shore until the matter is resolved. The Italian government has been funding a crew to keep it maintained, but it’s being kept where it is until the matter is resolved. After basking in the sun on the pier for a while, we strolled back into to Trieste and stopped by the local market for a sandwich which we took back to our place to eat. Even the supermarket sandwiches here are delicious with fresh focaccia bread. After lunch we went up to the fortress overlooking Trieste and toured the grounds and soaked in the views before returning back to the apartment for dinner. We dined on left over salad and fruit and finished the day by editing some of the 360 video and general relaxing on the couch.

Tomorrow we start our journey home with a flight to Frankfurt where we will spend the night at an airport hotel. We learned from our last Europe trip to not to try to make international connections on the same day.

I’ll post the video for Trieste hopefully tomorrow when we arrive at Frankfurt. The apartment WiFi is pretty slow and it can’t handle the larger video I have from the last couple days, so you will have to settle for a the pics for now.
