Salzburg – Golling – Alpe Adria Cycle path

Hello Bavarian Alps! Eager to get back on the bikes, we left Salzburg this morning under a light drizzle. It rained hard overnight so the river had swelled and turned a little brown from the run off. With today being a short 27 km day, we left Salzburg in the opposite direction for about 5 km to ride along the river and to get our bikes adjusted. This is the third set of bikes we have had so getting the seat height adjusted and dealing with the other aspects of the gear switching takes a few km to feel right.

After enjoying a short ride in the wrong direction we turned around and heading towards Golling. The day started off by riding along the river for several km before meandering up against some foothills of the Alps. The rain stopped by mid morning, but the clouds remained, snuggling up to the foothills and giving them that misty look. We soon found ourselves pedaling along through green mountain hills dotted with sheep, cows and picturesque Bavarian homes.

We stopped in the town of Hallein for a coffee before resuming our ride. Before long we reached our destination of Golling.

Being a short day we wanted to ride more, but also wanted to preserve the surprise of what is around the corner for tomorrow. So we located our hotel and stowed the bikes.

We arrived too late for lunch and too early for dinner so we rested a bit before venturing out to see the town and get some food.

In our wanderings, we discovered the local castle that is under renovation (but closed) and the local church which has a hill side cemetery with amazing views of the valley.

It seems a few of the restaurants are either closed for days off or closed permanently leaving the options thin. We settled on a Pizza/Kabob place and had an enjoyable pizza before closing out the day with gelato.
