A wet day from Fridingen to Obermarchtal

When planning this adventure we knew we would likely see some rain, and we got plenty of it today. (Over an inch of rain in the last 24 hours with the majority of it falling on us.) Within 15 minutes of setting out this morning, the rain began as a drizzle then, quickly shifted to a constant heavy rain that did not let up until well after we arrived at our hotel in Obermarchtal.

The 54 miles of the path were actually quite beautiful. Plenty of open fields, with numerous crossings of the Danube. Despite the headwaters of the Danube disappearing into the limestone fissures we saw yesterday, it has continued to collect water from minor tributaries and has began to grow.

We had hoped to stop and explore Sigmaringen a bit, but with the heavy rain, we just pressed on wanting to get to Obermarchtal as soon as possible. I snapped a couple of quick photos before pedaling on.

We eventually stopped in Mengen for two cups of hot coffee (each) and a sweet. The cafe staff were sympathetic to two wet cyclists and took good care of us.

Fueled by coffee and the desire to get moving again to warm up, we headed out to finish the remaining 45 km.

We arrived soaked to the bone and our shoes squishing as we climbed the stairs to our room seeking a hot shower. The hotel does not have any dinner options, other than walking back into town. Which we would probably do absent the threat of rain. So we settled in to dine on a cliff bar and a beef stick. Thus we will spend the evening drying out our clothes and shoes.
