Donaueschingen to Fridingen

And we are off! Under overcast sky’s we set out from Donaueschingen to a little beyond Fridingen to Jagerhaus Gastthaus (our hotel for the night.) We were so excited that we neglected to take many pics early in the day. We followed the GPS tracks that we were provided which were helpful in keeping us on track. The side effect of that was we may have missed some of the sites along the way which were slightly off the path. The app I am using for the GPS tracks shows the cycle path, but little else. (No landmarks or even city names.) Regardless, we had a wonderful day cycling into the beauty and unknown of a country unfamiliar to us.

We watched the Danube flow lazily along and eventually disappear into the porous limestone where it flows underground for a large part of the year.

Stork

Along the way we spotted white swans, blue herons in the river and many storks patrolling the feilds.

We stopped for coffee and a sweet treat in Mohringen at a cafe/ small grocery store. We were assisted by a delightful host. When we asked if she spoke English she easily switched from German to English and helped us order and setup a table outside. Our host made a small comment that she was nervous to use English to talk to us. We assured her that her English was excellent and that we were delighted that she was so helpful.

As we approached Fridingen the GPX tracks ended and we started looking for directions to Jagerhaus. About this time the sky’s opened up for a passing down pour. We were fortunate to have stopped near an industrial area where there was a large covered area we could shelter in. The down pour lasted only about 10 minutes which gave me time to get some idea of which direction to head towards. In the end we found our hotel after few navigational challenges.

After settling in we enjoyed a wonderful meal. Lori had the Goulash and I had a steak. Needless to say a bit more expensive than last nights meal.

And so ends the first cycling day. Tomorrow we have 90 kilometers to ride, with rain forecasted, it should prove interesting.
