Donauworth – Ingolstadt

We had another pleasant day on the Danube cycle path. Leaving Donauworth we encountered some hills for about 10 km. Perhaps the most hills we have seen thus far. Still not that bad especially with e-bike power to help. Don’t get me wrong, you still have to work to get up the hills, but having e-bikes makes it more manageable. The rental e-bikes we have would be considered class-2 e-bikes in the states. They provide boost up until 25 kph and then after that it’s all human power.

The hill climbs took us into some rolling hills farm land. Quite picturesque. As we deceneded the hills, we passed right by a grocery store. So we stopped for some supplies. Thus far we have been snacking on Costco beef sticks and Cliff bars that we brought from home. With supplies dewendling, we needed some other options that pack well and can serve as a meal or snack to keep us powered. We managed to find some dense protein bars and some fresh salami.

With fresh supplies we hit the road again and promptly joined up with the Danube for several km.

After passing through a few small towns we came across a Schloss/Herrenhaus/Castle that was quite stately. According to Google/Wikipedia it is the Bertoldshiem Castle. Follow the link to read more details about it. (You may need to translate this from German, since there does not seem to be an English page.) In any case it’s worth a read.

We next arrived at Neuburg and visited the Neuburg castle. The castle inner courtyard has renaissance scenes etched into the stone walls. We stopped for lunch in the courtyard and enjoyed marveling at the scenes and the amount of effort that must have gone into creating them. We also tried to visit the church nearby, but it was closed so we settled for some pics in the town square.

After lunch we pressed on towards Ingolstadt as a light sprinkle had been falling for awhile, and fearing a reprise of a few days ago, we wanted to get as many miles/km in just in case.

After a long stretch of cycle path along a busy road, we entered Weichering and passed by the Grunau Hunting Lodge which leads to a wooded area and a pleasant ride into Ingolstadt.

Even though I mentioned a light rain/sprinkle it didn’t impact our day. We put on our jackets and rode on.

Our hotel is located in a residential district of Ingolstadt, and given the lack of restaurants and a light rain we made another visit to a grocery store to pick up a few things for dinner.

Another fine day on our cycling grand tour. Tomorrow we have an 85+ km day traveling to Regensburg where we will have another rest day to explore the city.
