Ulm – Donauwörth

With ~100 KM (~60 miles) ride ahead of us, we headed out as early as we could. With another nice day we looked forward to a ride closer to the river. We decided to take an alternate path that stayed close to the river, and we were not disappointed. Our ride today consisted of a good portion of gravel paths along the river, through forested paths and farm lands.

We took a short detour to the church of Our Lady in Gunsburg, to view an amazing Frauenkiche church. Construction was started in 1736 and completed in 1741. The interior is covered with frescos that pictures don’t do it justice.

The later half of the day was spent riding through farm land complicated by a strong headwind. We were thankful for a fully charged batteries today as the headwinds were brutal.

We arrived in Donauworth and passed through the historic city gate. On an sad historic note, during world war 2, 75% of the population of Donauworth perished during bombing raids, and the town was fully rebuilt the late 20th century.

We promptly located our hotel and settled into the routine of storing the bikes, unpacking and showering. Afterwards we toured the small city, stopped by the local church and discovered the Monastery of the Holy Cross.

We again found ourselves at an Italian restaurant as neither of us were in the mood for Schnitzel. I’m sure that is in our future, just not today.
