Obermarchtal – Ulm

The sun has returned, and with little threat of rain we set out for Ulm. After yesterday’s wet adventure, we welcomed the ability to ride in the sun.

Early in the day, we stopped for coffee at a fishing area and to charge my e-bike. I’m not sure what fish were in this pond, but they were huge! Easily 2-3 feet long (Google says they are probably Carp). No one was fishing, but a group of locals were there at the cafe shooting the breeze.

On today’s journey (Saturday August 22, 2026) we passed through several small towns including Munderkingen which has a few timbered buildings and some interesting crane statues. (Be sure to zoom in on the pics to check them out.)

The ride was varied some parts along the river, other parts as side streets in small housing district communities, and others along busy roads. I’ve been using GPS tracks to navigate and the Komoot app. The GPS tracks and turn by turn navigation has been very handy. That is until your phone and its holder falls off your bike on to the pavement! Thankfully the phone appears to be undamaged, but the cell phone holder appears to have broken. What proved challenging is that we had to navigate around some construction through a busy section of town with little signage due to the detour. In the end we survived thanks to another cyclist who passed us and we were able to follow through the challenging city construction zone.

We arrived tired to our hotel – The Rathaus Hotel, which thankfully is not a house of rodents. Rathaus in German means “town hall” and is fitting since the hotel is in the heart of Ulm’s old town, right by the old town hall.

As I mentioned earlier the need to charge my bike battery. Apparently when setting up the batteries to charge last night one of the cables came loose when I closed the door on the charging box. Lesson learned. So I had low battery to start the day which meant a good portion of the day was Stubo-power instead of e-bike power. On the bright side, more calories burned means more Gelato!

After cleaning up we set out for some dinner. We found a local Italian restaurant where we had a delightful meal consisting of charcuterie board of meat and cheese and a Neapolitan pizza. The food was delicious and the service excellent. We closed the night off with a gelato desert and a walk back to our “not a rodent house” hotel.

As for the cell phone holder, we managed to find one after stopping at a few shops. So we should be set for another ride on Monday.
