Ingolstadt – Regensburg

With a warm sunny day ahead of us we eagerly set out for today’s adventure. On the agenda today was a stop at the Weltenburg Abby. The path today was varied, predeomantly spent on or near the river with an occasional detour through a town or small residential area. As we left the small town of Eining we passed through farmlands of corn and hops. The hop fields were enormous with the vine support structures well over 20-25 feet tall.

We arrived at the Weltenburg Abby at lunch time and it’s a popular place for food in its outdoor Biergarten. We had two pretzels and split a Pork Knuckle (Haxn) and of course some Apple Strudel. Both were delicious. After lunch we visited the Abby church, and marveled at the amazing frescos, statues and alter. There was no photography allowed so we respected that request. I do wish I was able to capture it as it was by far one of most amazing I have seen. There appear to be several pics online and it’s worth doing a search to see them. During our visit the lights were on low vs some of the pictures online which show it brightly lit. In any case you could spend a good hour in there looking at the amazing art.

We departed the Abby via a small river boat, which took us part way down the river towards Kelheim. The river journey was beautiful. I took some video footage on my insta360 camera and will edit the footage tomorrow on our rest day. We were let off on the opposite bank of the river, and headed out for part two of our journey to Regensburg.

The rest of the way to Regensburg was spent mostly along the river and was quite enjoyable. We stopped a couple of times to rest our backsides and shoulders. With over 5 hours in the saddle we tend to get a bit sore on the longer rides.

Upon arrival at our hotel we stowed the bikes and showered. We both had a lot of grit on us from the gravel track which seemed to be the path surface for a good chunk of the day.

Our luggage was delayed so we headed out to see a bit of the city. We discovered we were only a short walk from the cathedral so we went in for a look. Being late in the day there was a lot of hustle and bustle going on in front of the church so I didn’t get a picture. We plan to visit tomorrow morning when things are slower and perhaps when the lighting is better as the inside of the church was very dark.

Not feeling too hungry we stopped at a cafe where we split an order of fries so we could save room for gelato.

Another great day on the Danube cycle grand tour. Tomorrow we have a rest day to catch up on laundry and explore Regensburg. We plan to try some of the legendary Regensburg sausages and enjoy a day of rest.
