Deggendorf – Passau

We had a leisurely ride into Passau today. The scenery was similar but a bit more scenic with large stretches along the Danube. We took our time today since it was a mere 55 km. The route stayed predominantly on the north side of the Danube and was pretty flat. We also did not have any wind to contend with either, which was a welcome change from yesterday’s blustery event.

We stopped by the Benedictine Abbey Niederaltaich to look at the frescos and Baroque basilica. Oddly there are some entombed saints in glass boxes which is a bit creepy. That said the frescos were impressive. Outside the Abbey we met a group of four German’s who were also on a tour from the same tour company we are using. We chatted a bit about our their’s and our adventures.

As we entered Passau we began to see quite a few river cruise ships, and were able to capture one on video as it crossed under the bridge we were on. We have heard a lot about how low the Danube is this year but the ships seem to be sailing.

Upon arrival in Passau, we went to the three rivers confluence point on where the Inn, Danube and Ilz converge and took a pic to mark the milestone of this Danube Cycle Grand Tour.

We stopped for lunch at a burger grill chain and enjoyed some comfort food before heading to our hotel. We arrived early enough to get some laundry done since the laundromat was just down the street.

Tomorrow we have a day off in Passau to explore. We hope to see the Veste Oberhaus Castle and of course visit St. Stephan Cathedral. I took a lot of video today on the Insta360 including quite a bit at the Abbey. I’ll edit those and get them posted tomorrow.
