Regensburg – Deggendorf

With a warm day ahead of us (upper 80’s F) and a threat of rain we set out early from Regensburg at 7:30 AM. Today’s ~100 km route followed the river, but included some detours due to flood damage from previous years. The scenery was much like we have seen before, corn fields and farm lands mixed with residential areas. I didn’t take too many pictures today (nor any 360 video) as the scenery was not overly compelling. With that said, it was still a pleasant day on the cycle path as the majority of the day was spent along quiet roads. While we followed the river, we were mostly on the low side of the levee, vs riding on the levee. That limited our view of the river. Still a good day.

About noon we passed through the town of Staubing where we stopped for a coffee and gelato.

As I mentioned before we had a couple of detours due to previous flood damage. In one particular section we had to back track a ways to the previous cross road. While looking at the map, a local came up and graciously redirected us to the lengthy detour. He was quite helpful as the Komoot cycle app was fairly useless at helping us find an alternate route in this case. And while I am sure I may have found a way around the detour it probably would not have been ideal. The roads here in Germany have no shoulder so when you do cycle on the road the cars wiz by at high speed. Thus it’s best to stick the roads where cyclists are expected vs taking chances with busy roads.

As we approached Deggendorf the wind picked up and this happened to occur on a stretch where we were riding on the gravel path on the top of the levee. This subjected us to the strong winds which were quite significant, and they tossed us around a bit almost blowing us off the levee and down the embankment. Fortunately we survived and were quite pleased when the path went back down and off the top of the levee.

Our hotel tonight is a 4 star, and we are treating ourselves to a welcome luxury of air conditioning! After showering, we toured the town, stopping by the church and walking the retail shops. We are having dinner tonight at our hotel restaurant, which appears to be a note worthy as well. Afterwards we will bask in the luxury of air conditioning.
