Vienna – rest day 2

With one more day in Vienna, we slept in a little and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast. Afterwards we set out to explore the city a bit before our WWII guided tour. As we were waiting for our Uber, we met a couple who are from California and are also on a long cycle tour. They too are on their way to Budapest but on their own schedule riding for as long as the desire and then booking a hotel later in the day.

We said our goodbyes it started to rain, for which we were jokingly accused of bringing the rain with us.

We wandered the streets of Vienna hitting the shopping district first, and then strolling to Cafe Sperl an authentic Vienna Coffee house that has been in business since 1880. We enjoyed a cup of coffee and some delightful Apple Strudel. We have been testing various Apple Strudels along the way and have a ranking system where we rate the quality. Thus far the top spot for Apple Strudel in our opinion is the Weltenburg Abbey. Second on the list was today’s Cafe Sperl here in Vienna, and in third place is the Hotel Hottl in Deggendorf. We have tried a few others, but they don’t compare to these three thus far.

After our coffee house stop we headed back to the meeting point for our WWII walking tour. Our guide Dieter, was amazing and informative. We visited several historic sites in Vienna and learned a great deal about Vienna’s part in WWII. The tour was fascinating, and we learned a great deal about Austrian history, and how it was intertwined with Adolf Hitler.

Stumble stone – marking the names of Jewish people who lived/owned this building before WWII and what happened to them.

We returned to our hotel to meet up with our tour company to have a handoff with new bikes and prep for part two our Danube cycle tour to Budapest. After a few days in Vienna, were are eager to get back on the cycle trail and leave the bustling city of 2 million people behind. Being both introverts, we are ready to find the peaceful path of the river again.
